Shared research infrastructure
Seven shared facilities, from a lab on the beach to an observatory above the inversion layer. Book the Marine Lab, MS Teisten and the wet and dry labs through RiS.

Zeppelin Observatory
The observatory sits on the Zeppelin Mountain, above the local inversion layer, so interference from local pollution is minimal.

Marine Laboratory
The Kings Bay Marine Laboratory is the northernmost experimental lab for marine ecology, physiology and biochemistry, and for physical sciences like oceanography, marine geology and ice physics.

Gruvebadet Atmosphere Laboratory
An atmosphere laboratory and observatory. Among other instruments, it hosts equipment for aerosol sampling.

Light Sensitive Cabin
For research and instruments that need to get away from the light pollution in town.

MS Teisten
A small work boat equipped for smaller scientific operations and surveys, with plenty of field sampling equipment on board.

Run by researchers from INRiM
Metrology Laboratory
Measurement is not just reading an instrument. Here, by agreement, researchers can evaluate the uncertainty of their instruments under direct supervision from INRiM researchers.
Booking
Common infrastructure and the chemicals you need are booked through RiS, together with your flights and rooms.
How to book in RiSWorkshops
Most research institutions in Ny-Ålesund have workshops visiting scientists can use. Ask your host institution.
Safety in the lab
Follow your host institution’s procedures. You are responsible for your methods, chemicals and lab routines, and sign the Kings Bay lab user agreement before you start.
